ARC Research Incubator

The ARC Clinical Research Incubator aims to support and promote the careers of early-stage ARC investigators in clinical research and generate high-quality publications to build global knowledge that can rapidly advance our contemporary understanding of ARF.

ARC Writer’s Workshop Summary | June 7, 2025

The ARC Writer’s Workshop was designed as a collaborative and supportive environment to strengthen research writing skills for the Clinical Research Incubator participants. Participants explored core components of scientific writing, emphasizing clarity, structure, and authorship integrity in global health research.

Key highlights included:

  • Writing with Purpose: Attendees learned how to articulate their research clearly using the “My Science in One Sentence” formula to succinctly explain what they studied, why it matters, and what they found.

  • Paper Structure: The session broke down the four essential sections of a research paper: Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion—detailing what content belongs where and why each part matters.

  • Active Voice in Scientific Writing: Emphasis was placed on using active voice to enhance clarity, ownership, and impact, with practical before-and-after examples from RHD studies.

  • Clear Methods Writing: Guidance on writing reproducible, transparent methods was shared, including a checklist covering study design, procedures, and analysis.

  • Improving Figures and Tables: Common mistakes such as unclear labels, overloading with data, and poor formatting were discussed, along with strategies for clean, effective visual data presentation.

  • Crafting the Discussion: A structured four-part framework—summary, interpretation, limitations, and implications—was introduced to help participants develop strong discussion sections.

  • Authorship & Equity: The workshop outlined ICMJE criteria for authorship, highlighted common authorship misconduct, and emphasized fairness and transparency, especially in global health collaborations.

  • Journal Selection & Cover Letters: Tips were provided on choosing the right journal for submission, aligning with a journal’s scope, and drafting compelling cover letters that make a strong first impression.

The session closed with encouragement to view writing as a process, celebrate progress at every stage, and keep equity, clarity, and rigor at the heart of all scientific communication.

Modules

The Incubator consists of 4 modules aimed at supporting investigators towards a scientific presentation and publication by mid-2025. Each module will consist of an educational webinar that may be attended in-person or virtually, pre-work by the site investigator, submission of this work to the coordinating center for feedback, and revision of this work to produce a near-final element that will be included in the future manuscript.
